Pamplin School of Business: Meet Emily

April 26, 2012

Weekend on the Bluff

Hopefully, if you are reading this, you are considering attending University of Portland or have already made the choice to attend. If so, you may have been at Weekend on the Bluff last weekend. It is an annual event that invites prospective students and their parents to come to UP’s campus, take a tour, listen to presentations given by various academic departments, and see all that UP has to offer!

This was my first time experiencing Weekend on the Bluff, as I was not able to attend my senior year of high school. The prospective freshman (“prefrosh”) arrived early Saturday morning and attended a welcome ceremony in the Chiles Center. After that, the students were encouraged to attend two different academic schools’ presentations to hear an overview of the programs offered. I was a part of the Pamplin School of Business’s presentation, so I got to talk about the Pamplin Professional Preparation Program that is a unique aspect of UP’s business school. Then, I attended a Q&A lunch that was open to prefrosh interested in the business school.

Following lunch, there were various other presentation and information sessions going on around campus. I headed over to the Studies Abroad presentation to work at the China table. The incoming class of 2016 will be offered a unique opportunity to study Chinese in three 4-credit semesters. Ideally, the class would be taken fall and spring of freshman year, fall of sophomore year, and then the student could study abroad in Beijing, China spring of their sophomore year. Of course, there were many other programs and locations represented at the Studies Abroad presentation and there is really somewhere for everyone!

Around 3:30 all of the presentations were done and prefrosh either went home or stayed the night. Students who spent the night were housed in a dorm room with a current UP student and hosted for the night by that student. This particular weekend UP was holding their annual Rock the Bluff concert and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis were playing on campus! The put on a great show and the many prospective students I saw that night seemed to be having a great time. So, whether you just attended Weekend on the Bluff or may attend in the future, it’s a great time to really get to know UP, its faculty, staff, and students!
