Dr. Robert B. Pamplin, Jr.

Dr. Robert B. Pamplin, Jr. has earned two master's degrees from the University of Portland, was presented with an honorary doctorate in 1972 and holds the rank of professor at the University. Dr. Pamplin’s generous gift to the University’s Defining Moment Campaign established the Pamplin Scholars, Pamplin Fellows, and annual Pamplin Lecture. In honor of his commitment to the University’s life and work, the School of Business was named for him in 1999.

Dr. Pamplin is a businessman, philanthropist, farmer, minister, and author of thirteen books, including two book-of-the-month club selections. He has earned eight degrees, including two doctorates, in business, economics, accounting, education, and theology. He is chairman, president and chief executive officer of the R.B. Pamplin Corporation, a family-owned company with annual sales approaching $650 million, and founder of the Portland Tribune newspaper, and Columbia Empire Farms. Dr. Pamplin has served on Presidential and State Commissions, and as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for three colleges. He has been awarded many honorary degrees and national awards, including the Distinguished Leadership Medal from the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, the National Caring Award from the Caring Institute, the Herman W. Lay Memorial Award for being the outstanding entrepreneur of the year, the Woodrow Wilson Center Award for Corporate Citizenship, America’s Outstanding Individual Philanthropist by the Association of Fundraising Professionals and Volunteers of America’s 2006 National Volunteer of the Year. Most recently in Oregon he has been honored with the Governor’s Arts Award, Governor’s Gold Award, named Entrepreneur of the Year, Portland’s First Citizen, and selected by the Portland Business Journal as one of twenty leaders of change over the past twenty years. Pamplin has been featured in national magazines, newspapers, and on television.

He has delivered many commencement addresses and given more than 150 speeches including the opening prayer to the United States Senate and a speech on ethics at the Pentagon.
