A Sunny Weekend on the Bluff

It’s not often that I have had a full weekend of rain-free, sunny(ish) days here in Portland, but this weekend was just that! School is steadily gaining intensity as final projects are announced and buzz of finals week begins, but that didn’t stop many UP students from enjoying the outdoors. This weekend ignited spring fever in many UP students!

I started off the weekend by going to a yoga class at a studio downtown with a couple of friends. We wandered the streets of Portland for a while afterwards and were entertained by the many street performers that were taking their talents out into the sun. Friday night included dinner at The Commons, some dorm room baking, and hanging out at a house nearby campus.

Saturday morning was the Pamplin School of Business’s professional development class’s service day. I, along with about 100 others, met at the Chiles Center at 9:30am to get on buses and head to the nearby neighborhood of St. Johns. We were put into groups and assigned a specific task, all of which involved helping beautify St. Johns. My team worked together to remove ivy from a roadside flowerbed. Other groups planted trees, covered up graffiti, and removed trash from the streets. At around noon we were all given food vouchers for free lunch valid at different local restaurants in that area. I had a great vegetarian burrito at Proper Eats Café. After lunch, we finished our tasks and jumped back on the bus for the short ride back to UP. My friends and I took advantage of the sun and walked to Fred Meyer’s to get a few groceries for the week. We saw lots of runners and bikers along the way. My roommate went to the Portland Farmer’s Market at the PSU campus and said that it was busy and full of great food, so I think I’ll do that next weekend! Unfortunately, I had to spend Saturday night catching up on some work for the week. Many UP students were at the annual Hawaiian Luau put on by the Hawaii Club; I heard there were great food and fire dancers.

Sunday, as usual, was a quiet day on campus. After brunch and some homework, I took a walk to St. Johns and went to Howard Hall for a quick workout. There were lots of people throwing Frisbee on the lawn or doing homework on picnic blankets. Now it is Sunday night and Villa Maria dorm is outside singing the National Anthem at the top of their lungs… not sure what that is about :).

Though I have found Portland’s reputation for rain to be very true, these rare sunny days are gorgeous and really bring alive the whole campus! As summer approaches, hopefully there will be more sunny weekends on the Bluff!

Why I chose UP:  I chose University of Portland for many reasons. The first and primary reason being that UP is geographically far away and different from my hometown, Knoxville, TN. I wanted to enjoy a little Pacific Northwest living! Upon visiting the campus, I decided that UP was the school for me- it has a gorgeous small green (both in color and eco-friendly) campus with a welcoming, homey atmosphere. Best of all, University of Portland offers a great business program with small classes and the opportunity to study abroad.

Favorite thing about UP: Without a doubt, my favorite thing about UP is the closeness of its community and the benefits that come with that. I have only been on campus a couple of weeks and I have two on campus jobs, my professors know me by name, I have breakfast plans with a staff mentor, and my group of friends already feels like extended family. The networking and opportunities that come about from the small campus environment are invaluable characteristics of life here on the Bluff.
